[New day, new town, and hopefully new opportunities. Specifically opportunities to make some money because Zel and Emery’s funds have been running kind of low after their most recent misadventure. This has meant a temporary separation while Zelgadis goes to look for merc-type work and potential cure leads and Emery goes around chatting up the locals without terrifying them.

Or at least that was the plan, until Calanthe showed up.

By the time Zel gets back to the inn, Emery’s still busy talking to Calanthe in their inn room, although the conversation’s just about wrapping up. If he’s perceptive he might even catch a bit of Emery’s words.

“...some funds this time? ...Seriously, is that it? He’s always such a cheapskate. …Okay I got it. I’ll see you later.”

A few moments later a woman wearing a green cloak exits their inn room. Her hood is up, partly obscuring a pale face and hair, and she barely spares anyone a passing glance as she drifts down the hallway.

Emery is still standing inside the inn room looking pensive, but when Zel enters he’ll give him a bright smile.]

Oh! Hey, Zel. Did you manage to find anything?

[to be fair, the terrible place where something embarrassing happened isn't a monolith: he can be horribly embarrassed most anywhere regardless of realm; he makes it so easy. that won't be the lasting impression of anything unless he faceplants hard enough to leave a lasting impression somewhere on it!

that aside:] Mn. There's a few things I'd want to try and check on later, if there's a chance afterward... No sense picking anything up and risk it getting lost in the middle of what you're here to do.

[Ah-ha! So Zel is interested in coming back here. Emery will take that as a win, and accordingly grins. It means that Zel doesn’t totally hate it here!]

Sounds sensible. We’ll have plenty of time for this later.

[...As long as the Field Lord doesn’t give Emery another assignment right after this one, anyway.]

So I talked to the bookseller a bit about the roads around here, and the northwest road leads to a city on the bank of the Ganaranth. Nobody in town’s heading that way anytime soon so we won’t be able to hitch a ride out of town, but once we’re in the city it should be easy to find a ship headed up the river.

So unless there's horses or a cart to rent, we're walking? [or flying?

...actually...

Zel glances upward, curious to see if it was normal at all to see any flying about. aside from size or creature-features, he hadn't noticed any magical use at all. would flying even be magical in this realm?]

[Beside the tiny winged people Zelgadis has already seen, there’s not much to see in the sky aside from clouds and a distant flock of birds. Maybe there just isn’t much reason to head up?

Emery, meanwhile, blithely continues on.]

‘fraid so~ But you can tell me all about the books you were looking at while we travel.

[They could probably do that just as well on horseback as on foot, but whatever.]

[he blinks, feeling a little put on-the-spot. is it so strange that he's being asked about his interests without ulterior motive? come on, Zel.]

I wanted to get a sense of how historical records are handled, how folk stories are recounted...to get an idea of what's considered worthy of record at all. It's always different, country to country...even if some of the writing conventions are the same.

[Emery’s ulterior motive is that he loves Zel and wants to know more about Zel’s nerdy interests.]

Really? [Emery considers himself pretty well-read, but he hasn’t noticed that before- but he also hasn’t been travelling as long as Zel has.] Let me guess, people favour whatever version of things makes their country look best?

That-- [he nods.] --and what makes the things they love or hate look better or worse. It's very hard to find completely objective accounts on anything. Like reading about Seyruun from their documents versus Atlas City's. [actually...he kind of wants to read what the fey realm thinks of that famed holy city now.]

[Emery gives a little laugh and slips an arm into Zel's as they meander towards the road out of town.] And like what Avalon and Elphyne have to say about one another, I'd bet.

[Not that... he's actually read a lot about either fae city, but still. He's heard a decent amount of fairy gossip!]

[he nods.]

But...that's all plans for later, isn't it. [he tilts his head a little, peering at him.] I'm following your lead first, remember? [or is the heel-dragging intentional?]

That's right! I'm the boss here. [And Emery just blithely continues to smile, elucidating absolutely nothing.]

[chimerad]

[he squints briefly, wondering if it'd be right to needle for better insight or if that was too...smothery of a thing to do. honestly? he's usually the one on the receiving end of nosiness, and it's hard to say at any given point whether he prefers someone be too nosy or to just make assumptions and see where those chips fall. it often depends on how one person or the other expresses care - Lina was always more about action, whereas Amelia loves a chance for a good motivational speech, for example. him, though...?

maybe simply being present and aware is enough.

Well, boss, there's still daylight left. Are we picking through town for any supplies you want or are you interested in putting our backs to it already?

[Emery purses his lips thoughtfully, then shrugs.]

I think we have everything we need, so we might as well keep moving. The Ganaranth's supposed to be a pretty popular trade route, so if we need to do some shopping we'll probably have a chance soon. [And the area just outside of town is...] So! A nice, leisurely stroll through the woods it is.

[chimerad]

Right. [suits him fine; there's only so much Zel can stand of being out in daytime public. he turns and starts to navigate toward the main road leading out of town, his elbow crooked for Emery's taking.]

[Zel, needless to say, barely has to bend his elbow before Emery's glommed onto him. Emery's always been a physically affectionate person and it's very kind of Zel to adapt like this.

The road they need to take out of town is a fairly standard dirt road with light wagon ruts and stones lining either side of it. The greenery and foliage gradually gets thicker the further they get from town, although sunlight ripples through the leaves overhead and dapples the scenery with plenty of warm light. Grasses, flowers, ferns, and moss carpet the ground wherever the road doesn't break through.

Basically, it looks like a goddamn Ghibli movie out here. Emery takes a soft breath, breathing in the rich air of the woods.]

...It's so peaceful. I've heard that the fae realm also has trouble with bandits, but it's hard to imagine in a place like this.

[chimerad]

If fae run their lives the way regular people do, then that's not surprising. Opportunists are everywhere.

[he looks about.]

Though I guess I expected things to be a bit...weirder. Considering the fairy tales.

Oh? What were you expecting? Giant beanstalks, perhaps?

[...Actually Emery can't really rule out the possibility of fuckoff huge giant beanstalks being somewhere out there.]

[chimerad]

[don't tease!!!] Well...I guess. [:T] Or just...a different kind of "common" sense. Different rules for a different people, like how the mazoku or dragons prefer to operate.

[Stop being teasable!]

I don't know much about mazoku, but they feed off negative feelings, right? Fairies draw strength from the earth instead. [Or whatever element is relevant.] I guess that's not too different from humans, if you think about it.

[chimerad]

Guess that's why there's so many stories about vindictive fairies taking revenge on people for cutting down forests for towns and farms... [makes sense when it's put that way. they're all vying for the same land, even if the perception of that land is skewed by planes...

that's actually...kind of cool, he thinks.]

[fair_trouble]

[Emery nods.] Exactly. And whatever's done in the mundane realm will make itself known in the fairy realm one way or another. That's why the High Courts don't look favorably upon the ones who secretly meddle with the mundane realm for their own gain. [As Merry Morgan may be intending to do.]

Not that it's forbidden to take vengeance or do other things, but it's strictly regulated so things don't get set off-balance.

[chimerad]

[that does make him wonder...]

I wonder...how many world events actually had fey involvement, then... Intentional or not. If things are so interconnected, I have to assume that it's more likely than anyone would think.

[fair_trouble]

[Cheerily:] You're probably right about that, but I haven't learned that much history yet.

[Emery then goes a bit quiet, tilting his head away from Zel to gaze at the greenery of their surroundings.]

...Some fairies do make themselves known to humans. The Field Lord is actually worshipped as a god in a few villages in Zephilia and the northern Elmekia Empire.

[Zel looks at him in profile. you made yourself known, too, he thinks.]

...For good luck with the crops, right?

Right. Those who please him are rewarded with bountiful harvests, but those who get on his bad side...

[Emery shrugs.]

Well, he's allowed to make his own judgments when it comes to his villages.

Does it work the other way sometimes? Like how mazoku suffer during festival seasons or special occasions. Do fey have to...manipulate people for their benefits? [it's not precisely the same as mazoku, right? if the fey feed off the land, humans need not exist at all. so maybe not...]
